SPANISH OR CASTILIAN?

It is true that there is a controversy about whether to call the language spoken in Spain Castilian or Spanish refers to a broader concept, Spain, Latin America and Equatorial Guinea.

In fact, the official language of Spain according to the Spanish Constitution is Castilian, although in general, when addressing a foreigner, Spaniards speak Spanish and not Castilian, the truth is that both names are equivalent to the same language.

But at what point should we say one or the other?

Es cierto que existe una controversia sobre si llamar a la lengua hablada en España castellano o español se refiere a un concepto más amplio, España, América Latina y Guinea Ecuatorial.

De hecho, la lengua oficial de España según la Constitución Española es el castellano, aunque en general, al dirigirse a un extranjero, los españoles hablan español y no castellano, lo cierto es que ambos nombres equivalen a la misma lengua.

Pero, ¿en qué momento hay que decir uno u otro?

Etymologically the name "Castilian" comes from Castilla, which means land of castles. It is from the 9th century that the term Castilla and the language Castilian began to be used. In general, when there are two official languages in an Autonomous Community of Spain, it is customary to call it Castilian to differentiate it from the other official language. And as I said at the beginning, the Spanish Constitution calls Castilian the official language of Spain to differentiate it from the other official languages in the corresponding Autonomous Community.  

Etimológicamente el nombre "castellano" proviene de Castilla, que significa tierra de castillos. Es a partir del siglo IX cuando se empieza a utilizar el término Castilla y la lengua castellana. En general, cuando hay dos lenguas oficiales en una Comunidad Autónoma de España, se acostumbra a llamarla castellano para diferenciarla de la otra lengua oficial. Y como decía al principio, la Constitución Española llama al castellano lengua oficial de España para diferenciarla de las otras lenguas oficiales en la Comunidad Autónoma correspondiente.
